Three large LCD cockpit conceptCurrently most cockpits feature six display units. This provides the necessary redundancy in case a display unit malfunctions. The challenge of the NEWSCREEN project was to design a cockpit concept that had only three display units but with at least the same safety level as a cockpit with six display units. We supported our client, the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, by reviewing the development of the human-machine interface for the new cockpit concept. It had to have the same safety level and an improved level of dispatchability, both compared to the baseline, the proven Airbus A320 cockpit. Other design targets were a demonstration of the growth potential for new functions, and the suitability for cursor control. USE2ACES took the role of company test pilot and worked side-by-side with a certification pilot. The project was a success: all design targets were met or even exceeded. The new concept can provide the airlines with a cost-effective and safe flight deck with built-in growth potential for emerging functions. ![]() Impression of the NEWSCREEN flight deck
